Hanukkah, the Holiday of Light and Miracles, celebrates the rededication of the Holy Temple of Jerusalem.
The Maccabees, a small group, stood up against the warriors of Greece. After three years of fighting, the Maccabees were finally successful. In 164 BCE they drove the Syrians out of Israel and reclaimed the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.
To rededicate the temple an eternal light was to be lit. A tiny jug was found with only enough oil to last a single day. This oil was used to light the eternal light. A miracle occurred as the tiny amount of oil stayed lit not for one day, but for eight days until more oil could be pressed and brought in.
